Man! Is it me or are people just making some off-the-wall decisions when it comes to what nutrition advice to follow. I honestly wonder what the heck most people are thinking, then I realize, most people aren’t. And that’s the problem.

But not for you, my diligent listener. You’re thinking for yourself, which is probably why you’re here. You’ve probably realized that the advice most “nutrition experts” give isn’t getting people anywhere. And that’s what I want to talk about with you today: The Four Biggest Nutrition Mistakes I see people making, and why you should avoid them.

Today’s show highlights:

  • Two assets you have that can’t be taken from you that nevertheless must be protected at all times (1:14)
  • Gaining power over your life is as simple as gaining power over your words. Here is what you absolutely MUST begin to say (2:30)
  • Related to the previous point, you’re getting EXACTLY what you should get out of your life – why understanding this gives you all the power you need to change (3:01)
  • Four Big Nutrition Mistakes:
    • Don’t ever diet! Restricting calories will actually make you get fatter. Do this instead … (03:52)
    • Why seeking to lower your cholesterol with low-fat foods could be actually causing your body significant harm. (5:57)
    • You went light on the salt. Don’t skimp! … And don’t believe the hype that sodium is bad for you. Here’s why … (8:20)
    • Cutting protein. You’re literally cutting “that which comes first.” Fill your plate, but don’t forget the macronutrients ... (9:55)

Why do experts try to complicate things?

You’d think to be an expert, one would be good at taking the complex and making it more simple. When did that become the opposite? As you heard, nutrition and mindset are interconnected. Getting your body what it needs and sticking with a plan to get it in the best way possible is as simple as understanding how to influence yourself to make good choices.

What’s up Inner Strength listeners (and viewers, if you’re watching this Facebook Live video)? Now, you know I love and appreciate you. So I’m going to give you some medicine that is good for you – in your best interest – that you may not like. Hear me on this and you’re going to be well ahead …

Along with the medicine I administer in this episode, I’m going to show you how to clearly define what health means to you, and why that’s extremely important …

Let’s get into it, shall we?

Today’s show highlights:

  • Don’t waste your time. If you want to learn anything, here’s where you need to go ... (2:04)
  • I’ve said this before, but here’s the absolute, 100% proof for why there’s no such thing as competition - (Here’s your medicine, dear listener ...) (2:47)
  • What you’re really activating in your brain when you write down your goals and where to put your goals once you’ve written them … (5:22)
  • The wisdom behind breaking your goals down into their next, single step (6:53)
  • Where most people go wrong with their definitions of health, strength, wealth and happiness (8:05)
  • Cultivate these two assets of your character and increase your attractiveness in spades .. (12:31)

Defining health to you …

Once you have your own definition of health, you’re going to be miles ahead of everyone else in creating a plan that will actually work when it comes to helping you reach your goals. And this can be duplicated in any area: wealth … work … relationships ….

If you’ve ever started going to a new gym, answer me this … Did you sorta feel like the guy who rides a scooter walking into a biker bar?

What’s up everyone. Kyle, here, and today’s show will be helpful for you if you’ve ever felt intimidated by the gym or a new fitness program. See below for what’s on tap.

Today’s show highlights:

  • Thinking of committing suicide? (DON’T) Then you absolutely MUST go to the gym on Mondays … (1:39)
  • Two fool-proof and fail-safe ways to quickly change your state of mind to get out of a negative funk and feeling good (1:49)
    • To borrow from Tony Robbins, “Motion leads emotion.” (2:37)
    • Heb’s Law: “What gets wired together gets fired together.” (3:10)
  • Nike founder Phil Knight’s secret to fast failure (5:03)
  • Why progress is a never-ending process that is intricately tied to your passion for living (6:15)
  • How to overcome the intimidation of going to the gym … or anything you find scarry (8:31)
  • Do these two simple things and I guarantee you’ll feel and look better (11:08)

We’ll take it from here …

At my gym, when people show up, we have a saying people see that hangs on our door. The sign says: “You just did the hard part. We’ll take the rest from here.”

Just remember, the hardest part about accomplishing any goal is just showing up. Do that, and you’re well on your way. Keep this in mind as you get familiar with a new gym. Keep showing up and in no time you’ll feel like you were born to be there.

You’ve seen that guy. You know, the overweight one who spends an hour on the elliptical machine going at a moderate to easy pace then as soon as he’s done heads to smoothie counter thinking he’s worked so hard, surely if just keeps at it, he’ll lose the weight. You gotta admire the commitment, but the thing is, he’s been doing this routine for a year and has only lost a small percentage.

Maybe you are this guy, and if so, this show was tailor-made for you, as just like our friend above experienced, conventional wisdom – stuff you hear spouted in regular gyms on a daily basis – is stone cold WRONG when it comes to how to really lose weight. We’ll dispel some serious fallacies and get you on the right track in this episode.

Today’s show highlights:

  • What you must absolutely be 100 percent clear on when you enter into any negotiation, including the ones with yourself, to remove any self-doubt (2:04)
  • Why most people are like Ferraris driven by little old ladies … Take it to the limit! (3:05)
  • Fallacies of Fat Loss:
    • Cardio for weight loss – Why in the world would anyone believe being more efficient at using fat would make you burn more of it? What you should be doing instead ... (6:03)
    • Counting calories? Stop! It could ruin your sex life ... (7:35)
    • Eating six small meals a day is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Why you should eat fewer times per day, not more ... (10:03)
    • Think you shouldn’t eat before bedtime? Think again. This secret will help you sleep better, recover faster and trim down with ease (11:42)
  • Never, ever, EVER eat anything when you’re in this state of mind ... (11:50)

A book you need to read … yesterday.

So much of losing weight, gaining muscle, accomplishing goals and becoming our best selves begins with negotiating.

A book I’m reading now, I highly recommend you check out. It’s called Start with No: The Negotiation Tool That the Pros Don’t Want You to Know by the late Jim Camp. He was once called the world’s most feared negotiator. Some of the incites in this book have helped me to understand my own mindset on such a deeper level. You gotta check it out.

Hit me up on social ...

What’s up Inner Strength listeners? Today, I’m excited to be trying something new. I’m actually recording this podcast via Facebook live on the Kyle Newell fan page. The idea is that this will bring a little more interactivity to some of these shows. We’ll still cover very important and helpful topics, but I hope to be able to answer some of your questions live. Then, those live videos will be posted a couple weeks later as the podcasts. We’ll see how it goes … At least I’m taking some action.

And that, in large part, is what I want to talk about today – Leaders take action. And I explain this in a little more detail in this show, but you are a leader, even if you think you aren’t, so accept it. And use these tips to help you become your best self. Afterall that’s why you’re listening, right?

Today’s show highlights:

  • The absolute worst thing you can do when you start feel yourself getting into a depressed state of mind (2:43)
  • Get more done and bridge the anxiety gap through an understanding of how your brain’s thought patterns work (3:20)
  • If you don’t think you’re a leader, you’re wrong. Here’s why ... (4:58)
  • Two very simple but powerful words that affect your mindset about a problem, and which one successful people use to stack outcomes in their favor (5:19)
  • The only times in life when you can 100% count on resistance to  appear, and why it’s actually a great thing! (7:49)
  • What you absolutely must accept and embrace doing if you want to master anything (9:42)
  • Discipline doesn’t take away from your freedom. It gives you more … Here’s why … (10:45)

So much of becoming your best self begins with creating the right mindset. Striving for discipline in your life can seem like continually pricking your own eye with the wrong mindset, but change your thoughts and you’ll change your life.

Share your reviews!

Well, now that we’ve covered all that, please share this podcast and leave a review on iTunes. I hope you’re paying attention because they’ll probably be a test on this …

What’s up everyone? Kyle, here, and today I want to talk with you about the importance of focused attention as it applies to achieving your fitness goals. And I use the term “goals” sort of loosely, as a big problem I see is people setting goals that really have no meaning. We’re going to dig deeper into that in this episode. You ready?

Today’s show highlights:

  • Why the weight loss, bench press, and body fat fitness goals that most people set mean absolutely nothing, even if they reach those goals … This is how goals should truly be set (1:25)
  • Getting with the program – the importance of having daily and weekly systems to bring concentrated focus to each day, leaving you constantly feeling successful (2:28)
  • Train for something that makes you a little afraid. Here’s why ... (4:38)
  • Think exercise is primarily for your body? Think again. This is the exercise order of operation and how to account for it so you stay mentally engaged (5:39)
  • Don’t believe what the “gurus” tell you. Here’s how long it really takes with focused effort for a habit to take hold (8:37)
  • The most important part of any fitness plan that even experts overlook and leave out of a typical hard-goal plan (9:22)

Today’s show was a bit on the shorter side. I guess you could call it ultra-focused. If there’s one key thing you take away from the show, though, it’s have a good answer for your reason why as it relates to your goals. Go deeper than just “to be this weight,” or “to bench this much.” Tie your goals to something deeper. And if you need help with that, contact me.

Share what you think!

Alright, another show in the gym bag. Please share this podcast and leave a review on iTunes.

See you next time. You’re stronger than you know!

How do you like today’s title? Are you curious, wondering, “What the heck is Kyle talking about? I compete with people all the time.”

What’s up everyone? Kyle, here, and you read it right … There really is no such thing as competition … IF you adopt the right mindset. And that’s what we’re going to be talking about today. To be your best, you need to shake a competition mindset and I’ll show you how to do that. I’ll also show you how to take the energy and confidence you’d spend worrying and spin it toward other more productive tasks. Let’s dive in, shall we?

What’s in the show:

  • When people say they’re your competition this is what they’re actually doing and it has very little to do with you … (3:03)
  • You’re stacked! No, I don’t mean you’re layered in bulging muscle (though maybe you are, and if so, congratulations). I mean your unique skills that raise you beyond a competition mindset ... (3:55)
  • Dogs don’t bark at parked cars. If your “competition” is talking you must be moving … (5:50)
  • The emotions that drive a competition mindset and how to recognize them welling inside you … (6:39)
  • The difference in your brain between visualization and reality, and how worrying messes with your mind ... (7:30)
  • If you want to compete with someone, be your own competition … (9:15)

I heard a quote the other day that I thought was pretty cool –and it relates to today’s topic pretty well. The quote said, “The only person you should try to be better than is the one you were yesterday.” Of course that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try or that you shouldn’t push yourself to succeed. It simply means you should only use comparisons with others as a healthy gauge for where you are versus where you want to be and what you need to do to get there. Remember, comparison is the thief of happiness.

You’re stronger than you know!

I messed up. I called this the 65th episode of the show because I recorded this one before the special Halloween episode you heard last week, but don’t let this slip distract you. I’ve got something very helpful to share with you today.

The idea for today’s episode came to me while I was running hill sprints in my neighborhood on one of my at-home training days. After running my first sprint, I had the idea that I should time myself. In that short 20-minute workout session, I was able to shave 12 seconds off of my total time. This got me thinking about how important it is to set objective goals.

So today, we’re going to talk about finding that sweet spot when setting objective goals. Let’s dig in …

What’s in the show:

  • A little mindset tip for you - you don’t face resistance when you step down in status … (2:27)
  • Why speed is an equalizer when it comes to dealing with goal anxiety ... (5:35)
  • You cannot improve that which you don’t measure … (7:21)
  • Explaining the anxiety gap and why goals that are too big or too complicated increase anxiety and lead to analysis paralysis … (8:39)
  • You need fear, but you also need these two things to make create goals that will drive you ... (10:39)

I can’t harp on this enough. You might think, “Kyle, what’s the big deal? I’ll just push hard each time and try to make progress.” I’m telling you, if that’s what you want, then you’re destined to remain common. I want to be uncommon … Not normal. And the only way to get better at anything is to measure where you are, where you’ve been and to set objective, attainable goals for where you want to go.

Leave a review!

Alright, that’s gonna do it for today. As always I would greatly appreciate it if you’d share this podcast with a friend who could benefit, and please leave a review of the show on iTunes. This helps us get in front of more listeners looking for ways to become their best selves.

Until next time, keep measuring and keep achieving. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

Hedging the line between fall and winter, Halloween is the time of pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and dark superstition. But underneath the celebrations, graveyard stories and supernatural experiences lies some powerful mindset practices.

Today’s show dives deep into the supernatural and gives you one powerful practice to constantly make progress towards your goals.

Here Are The Unnerving Highlights:

  • A life lesson from the nightmare on Elm Street (2:00)
  • Why your favorite song is your favorite song (2:40)
  • A true story of halloween horror (3:30)
  • Action vs patience (7:40)

The 4 Quadrants

One of the most scary thoughts one could ever experience is reaching an age only to look back in complete regret, knowing that you’d spent your entire life and only scratched the surface of living life to your full potential.

Overcoming this hurdle and making damn sure you live your life with zero regrets is simple - but isn't sexy. And it all comes down to planning, being patient and taking action.

Enter today’s episode at your own will!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

How often does it feel like you are wasting your time doing things you either hate doing or really feel you shouldn’t be doing?

What’s up everyone? Got a great show for you today. You’re about to take the red pill to open your eyes to how you’re plugged into the time-sucking matrix!

Speaking of matrix, as a bit of background, you might want to do a quick Google search on Stephen Covey’s four quadrant Time Management Matrix ...

The tools and exercises we’re going to talk about are some of the most powerful for helping you to truly see how you are spending your time. And this will help you to know what you need to cut out so you can focus your energy on where you really should be spending your time..

What’s on tap:

  • How to use Covey’s quadrants to structure your life so you’re doing the things that bring you energy ... (03:04)
  • Which Quadrant we should be spending 90% of our time in and reasons why we don’t … (04:01)
  • Time to do a time inventory. How to do it, and why … (05:57)
  • A “Delegate and Elevate” quadrant exercise to help you hone in on what you should do versus delegate to others (this is extremely powerful when you do it ...) (07:23)
  • Why you should love meetings, but there’s a caveat ... (10:39)

Daily F5 goals ...

One other thing you might find useful, as you employ the concepts in this podcast, it’s important to think once more about your goals. When I’m scheduling my weeks, I’m very intentional on setting my F5 goals for each day. F5 stands for: Focus. Fitness. Family. Finance. Fun. These categories work for me, and they might for you as well, but hopefully they’ll serve as a springboard for further thought.

Leave a review!

Alright, that does it for this week. As I mentioned last week, I would greatly appreciate it if you’d share this podcast with a friend who could benefit, and please leave the show a review on iTunes. This helps us get in front of more listeners looking for ways to become their best selves.

Next week, I got something scary brewed up for you, with it being Halloween and all (I love this time of year ...). Until then, keep pressing forward. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

“Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.” - Sun Tzu, Art of War

What’s up Inner Strength listeners? Do you like that quote? There is a lot of high-level success coaching that can be gleaned from it. And it’s at the heart of what we’re going to chat about today.

I’ve been thinking through the Go-Giver series of books that I’ve been reading by author Bob Burg, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you because I believe the depth of knowledge from these books will help you to accomplish any goal, and ultimately, that is what this Inner Strength show is all about. So without further adieu, here is what we’re going to unpack today ...

Show Highlights:

  • You get what you give. Leaders aren’t simply all about the vision. Leaders need to be the best at giving. Here’s why ... (02:06)
  • If you just want to make the sale, you’re dependent upon the goodwill of the customer. But if you know this leadership principle, you are in the driver’s seat and customers will follow without resistence (03:51)
  • Money is not a measure of goodness or worthiness. Here’s what it really measures, and why getting more is simple ... (04:52)
  • Great leaders are fascinated and curious. Develop these to grow your impact ...  (5:15)
  • The difference between REACTING and RESPONDING, and which one good leaders always do ... (06:02)
  • Why the leader must keep focused on seeing the big picture, even when those he leads are fearful (09:01)
  • What influence really is and the secret for unleashing its full potential ... (10:37)

Ok. So this was a bit different than some of the stuff we’ve talked about in the past, but as you’ll see, the knowledge in these books is complementary to everything you’re already doing to become the best version of yourself. This is just another tool in the arsenal. And remember, leading others begins with leading yourself, and all of these points are applicable in that regard.

Leave us a review!

After more than a year of shows, we’re getting into a pretty good groove, and I’m hearing from listeners that the show is helping them. I am so happy to hear that.

If you like the show, you’re getting value from it, please leave the show a positive review on iTunes. And be sure to share the show with someone you know who could benefit.

Becoming our best selves and unlocking our own inner strength naturally leads to wanting to help others to do the same. Sharing this with them is a good start.

Alright. That’s all I’ve got for you today. I hope you geek out on this stuff like I do. Until next time, keep pressing on. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

You know, I’ve always wondered why people like going to haunted houses intent on being scared around this time of year. I think I’ve got it figured out … PEOPLE LOVE FEAR! It’s true. There’s excitement in being afraid. We are always afraid of something, but as I mentioned in the last episode, that fear can either fuel you or rule you.

I believe the fear that rules and keeps you from moving is simply fear without enthusiasm. That is the other key ingredient for forward motion toward a goal. If you can harness your fear and find enthusiasm and excitement in it, there’s not a thing in this world you can’t accomplish.

Show Highlights:

  • How fear and enthusiasm work hand-in-glove to drive sustainable motivation (02:26)
  • REMINDER: your mind craves this more than the most addictive drug, and it’s why people cheat ... (04:28)
  • Back to your MindMap - Where fear and enthusiasm lives in the brain and why these sections battle for prominence (04:50)
  • How understanding the power of these two fuels can make it so will-power doesn’t even come into play ... (12:55)

Give in to your fears ...

This is a really heady topic. And it expands upon one of the last points we covered last time. In that episode, I said fear is: (F)alse (E)vidence (A)ppearing (R)eal. And it is, because the thing you fear is always in the future. But while it may be etherial, it can still push us to achieve beyond what we would otherwise if we didn’t experience it, i.e., the fear of death after a heart attack leading to a new enthusiasm for working out …

Find a way to infuse fear into something related to your end goal, and let that fear excite you, driving your enthusiasm for what must be done to achieve your fitness and life goals.

Thanks for listening! I’d appreciate it if you’d leave the show a review on iTunes, and share this with a friend who could benefit from this knowledge.

As always, you’re on the right path in your journey toward unlocking your inner strength, and I’m humbled to be on it with you. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

Try to think of one of history’s greatest cowards. Did you come up with anybody? What about a hero - someone who disregarded their personal safety to take a massive action they believed in their heart to be right. I bet you could name quite a few of them …

The fact is, no one remembers the cowards. We remember the bold, or better yet, it’s the boldness of others that inspires us to remember. So how can you be bold so that history will remember you were here?

Show Highlights:

  • What a study of the mindset of olympic athletes showed that you can use to stack the success deck in your favor … (03:26)
  • Success in any area really hinges upon three very intricately tied principles (This is what people who read the book “The Secret” get wrong) and understanding these principles will give you a huge advantage over even the smartest people … (04:32)
  • I’m calling Bravo-Sierra on your claim that you have no time. You’re afraid! Here’s what to do with that fear to make it fuel you instead of rule you ... (09:59)
  • At some point in life you are going to want to inspire someone toward a goal. What will you say when they ask, “Why should I listen to you?” (12:55)

Create a mission statement for your life

Today, we got into some heavy topics. The thing is, there is no cut and dry, black and white paint-by-numbers path to success. And if there was, it wouldn’t inspire anyone to take it. Only people with a mission that drives them take inspiring, bold action. I know you have it in you to be one of them. But it starts with creating your own life mission statement. So get on that.

Being bold together ...

At Newell Strength, our mission is to inspire people to make positive change in their lives. That means we have to be working toward making positive change in our own lives, and we are. But one last thing I wanted to mention, as you write your mission statement and begin taking bold action, remember, you’re never alone. You’re simply bolder earlier on than the person you’ve yet to inspire.

Thanks for listening and be sure to get after it this week. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

What do JFK, cardio equipment and and breakfast cereals have in common? On the surface, you might think, nothing! But mention any of these and it’s a good way to get my immediate attention. Why? Because I love a good conspiracy theory. And, darn skippy, these are some good ones.

We can chat who really shot JFK later, but for today’s episode I want to dispel some fitness and medical myths, and expose a conspiracy that the government and big pharma don’t want you to know. They want to keep you sick, dumb and fat so you’ll be a good little servant and slave in their thought prison …

If you don’t enjoy today’s show, you’re just not woke, yo!

Show Highlights:

  • Why unless you’re Homer Simpson, you should never trust the labs regular doctors run ... (02:11)
  • The government pharmaceutical complex has turned cholesterol into the monster in the closet. Why you should stop buying that lie right now … (05:34)
  • It’s revenge of the regulatory nerds! Why poindexter’s inferiority complex is keeping you from being your smartest, strongest self … (10:16)
  • Who doesn’t love waffles!? But don’t eat them for breakfast. It is NOT the most important meal of the day. Here’s why they tell you it is ... (11:02)
  • Does a fuel efficient engine burn more fuel or less? Why most of today’s cardio workouts are a complete farce simply designed to get you to spend money … (12:54)

Question everything ...

Understanding why the government and the health industry is telling you these lies is going to be the best lesson you can learn in order to take control of your own health and strength. Knowing the truth, but more importantly, what you should be questioning, helps you to make better informed decisions and is going to help you make huge strides toward becoming your strongest, smartest and best self.

That’s all for this week. Next time we’re going to get back to talking mindset. Remember, you’re stronger than you know, even if the government doesn’t want you to be …

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

If we worked in the world’s richest bank, and I handed you a key, and this key opened up every door there was in this bank, including the vault, how valuable would that key be? Not one you’d want to lose, am I right?

What’s up Inner Strength friends? This show is sort of like that bank key in that I’m going to give you a key to unlocking any door to understanding human behaviors and desires. Knowing this will help you understand the way your mind works so you can work with your mind and your biology to make impactful change in your life, whether it be in terms of professional accomplishment or overcoming areas of struggle, like we talked about last time.

Buckle in because this is a heady show ...

Show Highlights:

  • It takes only 30 minutes a day to become an expert and influence people ... (03:27)
  • You are biologically programmed with eight life force desires. Understanding them is key to changing your life! (04:34)
  • Secondary desires that are not biological but learned that will help you rank your six human needs ...(07:28)
  • How these biological and learned desires, and the human needs help you better understand persuasion … (08:22)
  • The six human needs and why they are so powerful (Hint: it has to do with making you happy) (09:24)

An important announcement! Look for my book, coming soon!

You may not have heard yet, but I’m writing a book with Dax Moy, creator of the MindMAP Mastery I’ve been talking about for a few episodes now. Anyway, I wrote him something saying, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we did something together,” and he agreed. So look for something that digs a little bit deeper into this Mindmap stuff from me and Dax in the near future.

Last chance to join the October Mastermind Challenge

No kidding, this is literally your  last chance to commit to making serious strides and accomplishing a BIG 90-day goal. If you want to get coached by me to reach that big goal, join my October Mastermind challenge. Go to unlockingyourinnerstrength.com/mastermind.

I hope you got a lot out of learning these biological and learned desires along with the six human needs. I’ll be back with you next week with more interesting and helpful thought meat. Keep searching! You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

Don’t get mad at me for this truth I’m about to hit you with, but as I said last week, you either create or allow everything that happens to you in your life. That means the responsibility for your life is yours and yours alone.

What’s up Inner Strength listener? You know I love you, but today I’m going to hold up a mirror and reflect some things back to you that you may not want to see. The good news is, you’re not alone, and you can learn and grow by making small, consistent changes.

The 7 common struggles Show Highlights:

  • Don’t have time? Try facing your own death … (03:07)
  • How to create a good mindset and habits to exercise your discipline (04:54)
  • Motivation isn’t going to get you to your goal. This will … (06:21)
  • Sometimes you just need somebody to answer to ... (08:34)
  • Create steps for yourself to prevent overwhelm and move forward (10:20)
  • How to create confidence and focus your energy toward your goals (11:58)

Why it’s important to know your struggle areas

This may seem like a boring topic but I promise you, if you learn to become more self aware with where you struggle, you’ll be better prepared for addressing those struggles to accomplish more.

Pick one …

Don’t let this full list overwhelm you. Realize you don’t have to tackle all struggles all at once. Have a plan and set yourself up for small wins that will add up to big wins. Pick your biggest struggle right now, and work on that. For example, if you feel like you lack time to work out, make your goal to carve out time in your day. Then, once that’s done, move onto another struggle.

Join the October Mastermind Challenge

This is pretty much your last chance to commit to making serious strides and accomplishing a BIG 90-day goal. If you want to get in, join my October Mastermind challenge. Go to unlockingyourinnerstrength.com/mastermind.

Thanks for tuning in. Week by week you’re getting better, and you’re stronger than you know!

Are there any tax accountants listening to this episode? If so, do you know if I need to file a form 1099B with the government for the amount of gold I’m about to drop here?

What’s up Inner Strength listeners. Today’s podcast just might be one of the most valuable episodes I’ve done to date, as I’m going to unpack the knowledge of why you’re not losing your gut or your butt, no matter how many stairs you climb or how many combination lifts you string together.

This is a real and extremely frustrating problem for a significant number of people who no matter what diet or exercise they try, just can’t seem to fry off the fat. Well, my friends, if that’s you, I’m about to hand you the keys to free yourself from the fat shackles, and I’m giving it to you free of charge.

Cutting through the misinformation:

You know as well as I do that the market claiming to have the secret to blasting away fat like a sugar-doped boy with a pocketful of quarters pounding the fire button of an the old school Atari game of Space Invaders is seriously oversaturated.

And so many of these weight loss “experts” are saying, “Eat this diet ...” “Do this exercise …” “Drink this concoction …” “Stand on this foot when the full moon shines its brightest while chanting a Taylor Swift tune …”

Ok, I made the last one up, but you get my point. There is a ton of crap information out there. And I don’t want my listeners falling victim to it all. So that’s why I’m sharing with you the actual science to how your body burns fat so you can create a plan for fat burning that works for you.

Here’s what you’re going to learn:

  • Why bodybuilders have the absolute worst advice when it comes to losing and keeping off weight (01:47)
  • What fat actually is and how knowing this can take the pressure off of sticking to some fad diet to lose it (03:25)
  • Why skinny, ripped gym bros are more likely to die when North Korea launches all of those missiles (03:39)
  • What a floating stick of butter in a sink full of water can teach you about how your body stores and burns fat (04:01)
  • If you are on a low carb diet, don’t celebrate that weight loss too much yet. Here’s what you really lost (04:23)
  • Why this signal your muscles receive give your body no reason to burn body fat (04:36)
  • The three parts to fat loss: mobilization, transportation and utilization, and how to activate each to turn into a fat-burning furnace (05:14)
  • Why lack of blood flow to certain areas of your body can lead to stubborn belly fat (06:14)
  • A huge mistake people make with high-intensity training that is actually keeping them fat (07:01)
  • Here is how to structure your cardio to really see fat-melting results (07:48)
  • The time of day when your body’s insulin is at its lowest and why working out during this time can boost your fat lose significantly (09:12)
  • How the vast majority of people are shutting down their fat-burning engines for the rest of the day by simply eating traditional breakfasts (09:45)
  • When this hormone is high, you know you’re revved up to burn some stored chub (10:33)
  • Tell-tale signs your body gives you to let you know you’re about to start burning some serious fat (10:59)
  • Understanding your body’s “set point” with body weight and body fat and why you shouldn’t push too hard to go below it (12:32)

And if you’ll recall from previous episodes, two of your biggest fat-blasting weapons are proper sleep and a good mindset. In fact, I tell my clients it’s not so much what you eat as who you are when you eat it.

Combine those two weapons with the gold you learned in this podcast and you’ll be well on your way to maintaining your own “set point” and unlocking the inner strength inside you.

If you liked this episode, and if you listen to this podcast regularly, I’d like you to do something for me. I love sharing my experience and knowledge with you, but would you show me you appreciate it by leaving me a review on iTunes and sharing this episode with a friend? It’s my goal to get this useful information into as many hands of people who need it as possible. You can help. Thank you.

Finally, if you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to get into my October Mastermind challenge. If you want to know more, go to unlockingyourinnerstrength.com/mastermind.

That’s it for this week. Until next time, don’t forget, you’re stronger than you know!

Guess what, Inner Strength show listener? Today we’ve got some more MindMap content! We’re going to expand on the last episode’s topic because mindset is so important to achieving your best and healthiest self. It’s not a bunch of new age-y, “your aura’s harshing my chakra” kind of weirdness. This is legit science on how your brain and your body work in tandem. And if you know how your brain works, you can use its power to become your best self.

So there are a few things I want to share with you today. But first, if you are struggling with a body image issue, know you’re not alone. You’re never too sexy to have body image issues. Most people have them at some points in their lives. So cheer up!

Enough with the pep talk and on to business …

Let’s talk about: Definitions. This is so important for everything we’ll cover today, as it’s a foundation for an inner strength strategy (which I’ll expand upon in a future episode). I learned about this when, after coming off a couple of bodybuilding shows, looking as ripped and as good as I felt I’ve ever looked in my life, I blew out my knee playing basketball. At this point, I wasn’t working out for about five weeks and was feeling pretty flabby, but something funny happened … My wife, Devon, told me that I was the most attractive to her that I’ve ever been. Of course, I’ll share with you why she thought that, but it set me on a path of creating definitions.

On that path, adding in the MindMap principles, I learned:

  • Transformation may seen like it takes a long time, but it actually happens in an instant. Here’s why … (04:07)
  • Why you need to develop your definition of what health is (04:23)
  • Your brain needs to have this one thing in order for it to reach good decisions (04:39)
  • Why losing weight and getting ripped is not always the best thing (05:10)
  • I share with you my own personal definition of health (05:27)
  • What is the purpose of any goal, really? You might be surprised to learn the truth (06:01)
  • How to know you’re chasing after the wrong goal (06:21)
  • Why you can’t create good habits and why willpower is useless (in most cases ...) (06:44)
  • Where to find your willpower in your brain and what it actually runs off of (this will explain why you can never make it to the gym after work) (07:34)
  • Why you absolutely have to remove willpower from the habit-forming equation, and what you really need in its place ... (08:45)
  • Why this MindMap stuff is not only good for your head, but great for your physique (09:30)
  • What really controls how you look, how much you weigh, your body composition and how much fat or muscle you have (09:47)
  • Your hormones are cars in a parking lot. Here’s what happens when stress kicks in and they begin fighting for those spaces … (10:44)
  • Breaking it all down with cortisol (11:14)
  • The “Three King” hormones that regulate everything else (11:51)
  • The hormone you’re really having a problem with when you have low testosterone (12:14)
  • The one hormone you have the most control of (12:27)
  • What prednisone and catabolic steroids do to your body through hormone manipulation (12:42)
  • Why when it comes down to it, it’s not about calories in versus calories out. It’s really about this … (13:03)
  • Go on vacation and come home having lost weight? No way! … WAY! Here’s why (13:27)
  • What you must be in, in order to Rest. Digest. Relax. (13:52)

Take it from my experience, you need to pay attention to this stuff if you have a goal in your life you want to achieve.

That’s it for this episode. Later we’ll talk about how to form strategies to deal with things that will distract us from forming the habits that help us reach our goals.

Please leave us a review and share this episode with a friend. As a reminder, you can apply to work with me for the 90 Day Sprint Master Mind, which I guarantee you will achieve the outcome you set. Go to unlockingyourinnerstrength/mastermind.

You’re stronger than you know!

Hello gorgeous! No, not you (though I mean no offense). I was talking to your brain. Your brain is an amazingly beautiful and brilliant thing. It’s absolutely fascinating the more you understand how it works and where in your brain certain responses, feeling and thoughts happen.

I owe my love of the mind to MindMap Mastery coach Dax Moy. He introduced me to mind mapping when I went with my buddy CJ to one of Dax’s two-day conferences. By the end I was hooked, and it’s become the core of my coaching philosophy.

So what’s this all about?

In today’s episode, I’m going to share with you some seriously fascinating tidbits about how your brain has evolved to allow you to become self-actualized, and how three specific parts of your brain work together to control two important parts of your autonomic immune system. This is important because your best and strongest self can only be realized when you are in the proper state of mind - a state that just so happens to regulate the hormones in your body and bring balance. So without further adieu, here’s what you’ll learn today:

  • What is the science of transformation and why you should care (02:31)
  • What your brain is built around and why it thrives on habits (02:50)
  • The triune brain, its parts, and why it’s responsible for everything from hunger to sadness to logical though (03:05)
  • What habits actually free up your brain to do (03:41)
  • Where danger, food and sex actually register in your brain (04:02)
  • Where you feel connection, experience, emotion and attachment (05:05)
  • An area of the brain that is larger and more pronounced in women, and why (05:38)
  • How to avoid lowering your testosterone levels by not holding crying babies. Mostly for the guys ... (06:15)
  • Where logical and linear thought happens (06:45)
  • The key difference between change and transformation (07:35)
  • What you need to realize when trying to form new habits and why it’s not an “information” problem (08:15)
  • Why you should pay close attention to your main recurring top of mind emotions and what they actually mean (09:33)
  • How your hormones regulate your metabolism and the rest of your body (Hint: you can hack your weight by regulating hormones. Here’s how) … (10:01)
  • The two parts of your autonomic nervous system that control your hormones and at the same time enhance your chances of survival in stressful situations (11:18)
  • We’ve talked about this before, but the sympathetic nervous system’s response to stress is: Freeze, Flight or Fight. The order is important, and shows how brilliant your brain is ... (10:04)
  • Two alertness hormones that activate your muscular system (12:47)
  • Why activating your parasympathetic nervous system is so important for being healthy and losing weight (13:20)
  • How your brain sees judgement and why it’s a significant threat to your strength journey (15:07)
  • Why to get permission and give permission. This is crucial for our subconscious to accept suggestions (16:23)
  • The most stressful time of the day and how to plan for dealing with the natural stress response to get back into your parasympathetic nervous system ... (17:49)

There’s a lot for you to digest in here. And which nervous system should you be in while you digest it? Just making sure you were paying attention ...

All right, that’s all I’ve go for you today. Next time we’ll expand this MindMAP concept a bit further where we’ll talk about will power and how understanding how your mind works can make you willpower obsolete.

Keep pressing forward and win your week. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

“Tii-iii-iii-iiime is on my side. Yes it is!”

What’s up Unlocking Your Inner Strength listener? Do you ever feel like time is against you? Do you wonder where time goes even when you are trying to make the most of it to get things done?

When I was still working a full-time teaching gig, I managed to study and get my masters degree, I successfully started Newell Strength, trained and competed in bodybuilding shows, was nominated as “Author of the Year” on one of the top fitness sites in the world, and was published in numerous other places. I don’t say this to make you feel bad, or to brag. I only want to show you what is possible when you know the things we’re going to talk about today.

Fighting the right battles ...

I’m telling you, time is not your enemy, but you do have enemies that keep you from making the most of your time. Defeating them is easy when you know:

  • Who the two time enemies we all have are and the secret sword you can use to put through their hearts (01:35)
  • What to do with your writing to ensure each produced piece is leveraged to the hilt (This was crucial for growing my newsletter) … (02:37)
  • A simple mindset shift you can make to help you plan for productivity in the midst of chaos (03:49)
  • What happens to your brain when you throw it a surprise party (04:35)
  • The best mode to be in when confronted with chaos and how to get into this mode ... (04:43)
  • What is really the hardest thing about writing for most people … (05:01)
  • The one thing you really need to figure out how to do when you have more and more responsibility (05:54)
  • An easy trick you can do to get more leverage of you time (most people have no idea how to apply this simple trick) ... (07:04)
  • Why you should always carry a pocket notebook ... (07:45)
  • How to “live off the grid” with your errands. This is a very effective time leverage tactic that I use to keep me from losing focus ... (10:04)
  • Why your driving commute is some of the most valuable and productive time you have, if you use it right (10:21)
  • A $10 tool you can get to help you master leveraging your time to gain that slight edge (11:48)

Leveraging your time is the way to gain the slight edge, which is getting a little bit better each day, no matter what. I realized the power of leverage when my Dad wrote me a serious letter. He said, “Kyle, you have accomplished more in a year than most people do in 20. Help me.” That’s when I realized I was onto something unique.

If you apply what we covered in today’s episode, you be well on your way to making big things happen. I look forward to hearing the stories in the coming weeks.

Of course, we’ve got lot’s more great stuff to talk about. Real quick, I wanted to let you know about the opportunity to work closely with me as part of my 90-day Sprint Mastermind. I’m iron clad guaranteeing you, you will accomplish what you select as your outcome for this. But I’m only selecting a few people, so be sure to apply at: unlockingyourinnerstrength.com/mastermind

That’s all I’ve go for you today. Keep pressing forward. You’re stronger than you know!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

Gulp … gulp … gulp … ahhh! … Oh hey Inner Strength listener. What’s up? I didn’t see you there. I was just downing a tall glass of water. You should be drinking one, too. Water is extremely important and relevant to the topic we’re going to discuss today, which is how to recover your body after taxing workouts.

This podcast comes as a special request from one of my clients, and I’ll tell you, I have been extremely high on good recovery ever since I experienced the excruciatingly painful consequences of no recovery following the weeks upon weeks of intense work leading up to the 2007 IFBB state championships.

Settle in, and take notes on the knowledge I’m about to drop on you because it will help you get better results -- bigger gains in less time while reducing soreness and protecting against tactile and nervous system injury.

Are you training hard enough for recovery to be an issue?

Most people don’t. When I say “hard enough” I mean how much of your nervous system are you activating when you train? If you are training at an intense level then recovery, i.e., proper rest, becomes extremely important. Here’s what you’re gonna need to know:

  • How often you REALLY need to train hard in order to see great results (06:10)
  • What recovery days do for your body and your sympathetic and parasympathetic systems (06:56)
  • Don’t just sit there! What you need to be doing on recovery days (06:41)
  • The one exercise you must do on your recovery days to lower the stress hormone, cortisol (06:48)
  • What a cup of water and your nervous system have in common (07:37)
  • How high focus and creativity can use just as much energy as working out (08:11)
  • The absolute best time to work out to get your brain fired up and eliminate the issue of willpower (08:05)

The best diet … AND the best recovery tool … Sleep!

Sleep is your body’s natural recovery and repair tool. When you sleep, your body regulates hormones and recharges the brain. This is why when I hear so-called gurus talking about their “strug-life”, “sleep when you die” mindset, I have a hearty belly laugh. I’d do it right in their face, too, because I know it’s all a bunch of nonsense. If they are doing this, I can guarantee you it’s not often, and if it is, their productivity and creativity are so impaired, it might even make me sad for them. Don’t buy them day-old donuts. Here’s what you need to know about what happens when you sleep:

  • The absolute best sleep cycle that maximizes the average person’s circadian rhythm (09:16)
  • What your body does between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. that will make you want to have your teeth brushed and head on the pillow by 9:30 each night (09:10)
  • Why deep sleep between the hours of 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. is so important for your creativity and productivity (09:25)
  • There are some people who are the sleepless elite, but chances are, you ain’t it (10:06)

The one thing ain’t the only thing when it comes to nutrition and recovery ...

Amino acids are the building blocks for rebuilding your muscle tissue. You need lots of good high-quality protein (i.e., amino acids) for recovery, but you’ll also need more. Learn:

  • Why eating only protein will slow your recovery to a crawl (11:29)
  • What else you should be eating (11:42)
  • How much water you need to be drinking. (This is VERY important!) (12:06)
  • How anabolic steroids work and how they enhance recovery (11:55)
  • The supplements that will help you recover faster (13:12)
  • What is really going on when you’re sore (12:51)
  • What to do to promote healing and rejuvenate your nervous system (14:33)

Massage and stretching …

Here are a few other things that help cut recovery time, release endorphins and promote nervous system rejuvenation:

  • The magic touch! How massage helps with recovery (15:39)
  • A way of stretching that feels amazing, loosens tight joints and muscles and will leave you feeling like a million bucks! (16:04)
  • Go dark, float and soak. How deprivation tanks promote recovery (16:23)
  • Don’t be a deloading dummy. Just listen to your body for when you need to scale back (17:04)

Well, friends, this was a full episode. There was a lot of great information you can use right away to help you get the most out of your training. Remember, stress comes in many forms and you can use these tips to deal with stress in all of its forms. Now get out there and get after it! You’re stronger than you know.

More next time!

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

What’s happening Inner Strength friends? Is anyone else super frustrated by all of these over-emotional social justice warriors all over social media? It’s like you can’t say anything without offending someone. Well, get over it! Because today I’m going to talk about haters (which is just what SJWs are ...) and how their opinion is none of yours. But first ...

Your friend’s eyeball is just “ok” fish bait …

Last week I promised you I’d open the show by telling you the story of how I almost caught a fish using the King’s eyeball as bait. Ok, ok … I never almost caught a fish. In fact, when I hooked his eye -- because me reel locked up in my back cast -- I experienced a FREEZE moment (Remember? We talked about your body’s natural physiological responses to stress a couple episodes ago ...). This was the day I learned we have a choice in how we respond to stress. I also learned just how tough the King is, and I’ve never questioned his toughness since.

On to business ...

There’s something fishy about haters …

Haters gotta hate … I learned this the hard way when I ran a Ripped Abs contest last year on Facebook. I’d like to save you from mountains of frustration by sharing with you what I learned from the experience, such as:

  • What REALLY fuels a troll (i.e., an online hater that emerges from their mom’s basement to feed on hate) (10:02)
  • How to understand the mindset of a hater to beat them at their own game (08:57)

  • IF you engage with a hater (don’t ... just … don’t) you have to speak to them in their language. Learn troll-anese here (9:16)

  • What goes out the window when emotion is high (09:31)
  • You might be wondering WHY the hater’s targeting you. Relax. It actually has very little to do with you. Here’s why haters engage you (Hint: you’re a mirror) (11:02)

Self talk to deal with haters

You’ve gotta be in the right state of mind to control your thoughts (12:58), and this is a great way to deal with haters.

  • If you believe these two things, like Rocky vs. the Russian (you know, the one who tried to rig the presidential election), no hater can affect you (12:40)
  • Your brain is a super high-def movie projector. You think in images. Picture this image and doing this one thing to instantly get into the right mindset to deal with haters (13:31)
  • How haters can actually help you become better -- but you have to be honest with yourself … (14:29)
  • Dogs don’t bark at parked cars. What that says about you … (15:59)

This was a fun episode for me, and I hope you enjoy it. If you’re doing anything that matters you’re going to get some hate at some point. I hope you use these tips to keep focused and keep growing. You’re stronger than you know.

Be back with you next week!

Guys, I’ve seen the light. I’ve been so blind this whole time. Thanks to our good ole’ buddy, Tool Boy, for setting me straight with all of his melodramatic feels! I just had to share with you all, if you’re doing one-rep max lifts in the gym, STOP IMMEDIATELY! He woke me to the fact that it’s totes dangerous, yo.

Screw the whole, science, facts, and actual deep-level understanding of how your body’s physiology really works, thing. One-rep maxes are going to strain your muscles so hard they’ll pop right off your bones and maybe poke your spotter’s eye out.

If you haven’t caught on yet (but I know you have -- you’re smart enough to listen to this show so you’re quick like that) I’m being more than a little sarcastic.

Today’s show is all about (1) who the hell not to listen to; and, (2) understanding the truth of why people REALLY get hurt in the gym (Hint: It aint due to one-rep max lifts). Knowing this will keep your reps rockin’ and pecks from poppin’.

The softest generation …

*Side note* Most millennials are way too soft. My WWII veteran grandpa could still kick any millennial’s ass. Just sayin’ … (03:24)

Other nuggets you’ll learn, dear strength lockpicker …

  • How mechanical disadvantages and faulty movement patterns put your strength journey at risk (08:14)
  • Why you should NEVER lift heavy when coming off a bodybuilding show (11:34)
  • Why taking some anabolic steroids will make you as big as an ox but as frail as a dried twig (12:05)
  • How accommodating resistance and optimal muscle resting length work to safely make you stronger (08:44)
  • A testosterone supplement you SHOULD be taking that makes your muscles grow while keeping your tendons from shrivelling (12:47)
  • When you’re most likely to get injured -- in the gym or elsewhere (P.S. I see more injuries on the softball field and basketball court than I do in the gym) (07:09)
  • Why failure is like a callous on your hand, AND … (15:02)
  • Why you shouldn’t let Tool Boys deter you from living a great life (14:50)

Well, my friend, there’s a lot of nutritious thought-meat in this episode. I hope you enjoy it and take something away from it that you can use to grow stronger (mentally, physically and emotionally -- especially emotionally, so you’re not the the next Tool Boy waxing dramatic rhetoric on Facebook Live to feed your low self-worth).

Next week is the show’s one-year anniversary. I’ve got some great stuff lined up for you, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. You’ll just have to tune in to see what’s up.

I want to thank you for being a loyal listener. You’re stronger than you know (but you don’t have to prove it by going all out with a one-rep max).

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

Can unlocking your inner strength help to keep your spouse “to thine own love be true”? Most certainly, if you understand the driving reason for why people cheat on their spouses (Hint: it ain’t because the cabana boy is exotic or the milkman is sexier than you). In this podcast I tell you the secret on why people cheat on their spouses and how you can use this knowledge to not only keep her true, but overcome the obstacles that keep you from achieving your goals. (04:40)

Your brain is stupid cool!

One night, while I was pulling “Dad Duty” so Devon could sleep, I saw a truck in the driveway of the house next to us. No big deal, right? Well, this house has been in foreclosure for a while and I know ain’t nobody supposed to be over there. I decided to wake up Devon and we called the cops. I thought about going over to confront who was there and that thought, plus just how out-of-the-ordinary it was, got us both pretty excited.

Reflecting on the experience has shown me some pretty valuable things  which I share with you in this episode. The more you know about your brain and how it works, the better you’ll do in life. Just imagine being able to: (02:35)

  • Communicate better
  • Be more self-aware
  • Master strategy better than a Bobby Fisher android
  • Search out and recognize patterns like a jazz musician

That night I even discovered a foolproof aphrodisiac that your brain craves like a bee craves a flower. (3:08)

Trusting your cones for bigger cojones

Your eyes have six to seven million cones, each, and most are concentrated around the macula. In nature, a wolf takes down a musk-ox from the rear and the side -- never head-on.

The cones in our eyes help you to see side-advancing threats so you can react. In these moments you have a choice: (06:20)

Fight, Freeze or Run

Understanding these natural reactions can help you prepare and plan for chaos so when it inevitably comes, you can react and adapt to keep your strength journey moving forward.

Other important items in this episode ...

  • The one diet that absolutely blows every single other diet fad out there out of the water and how cheating on it makes your appetite explode! (09:06)
  • Letting you know about some upcoming shows with Dr. Dave where we talk about why Testosterone supplements are a “must-take” for anyone wanting to generally feel better (11:05)
  • How to harness your brain’s activity when presented with a problem and the right question to ask in the midst of a problem to make sure you learn something useful (12:47)

That’s it for this week! I hope you find the tidbits useful and entertaining. Until next time, keep searching for those keys to unlock your inner strength. You’re stronger than you know.

Peace,

  • Kyle Newell

Question 1: Of Dreams and Taking Action

Kyle remembers the time when his teacher in Biosignature humiliated him in class. His teacher decided to do a demonstration using him as the subject. It was the same joke that he's been using in his class.
