In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell gives an exciting talk about understanding body language and nonverbal cues. It’s good to determine what people are really trying to express in order to give room for positivity and success in life. Tune in and learn how to be a mind magician!

Sensing the Negativity

The brain and the body are tied to the nervous system. This is why it’s important to understand the nervous system on a basic level. If we aren’t familiar with it, we cannot make the best out with our brain and body.

Think about the time when you sat across someone, and felt the negativity in the air. It’s like you didn’t like to be around that person. Your nervous system took in what your body or brain perceived, and the system doesn’t lie.

The Friend Equation

Kyle shares a book about body language and human relationship. You can use the lessons it has to create or pull out of friendship. In any type of relationship, there are basically four factors: proximity, frequency, duration, and intensity.

Consider being in a long distance relationship. Both frequency and proximity are low. You’d need to increase the intensity and duration to make up for the loss.

You can figure the equation on paper. It’s fun when you figure things out.

Building A Sphere of Positivity

The more familiar you are with human relationships, the more able you are to build a great sphere of influence. Kyle reminds that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

He admits that there were times when he had to pull people out of his life. He still considers them as friends, but their philosophy in life just didn’t match. There are times when you need to take out the negative to give more place to the positive things in your life.

As Kyle discusses, you don’t have to be mean when cutting someone off. It’s completely normal to bond with others. This is why the brain does not pick up what happens in the process.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares his nutrition principles. Listen to know how he developed it, and learn how it could work for you too!

Here are the show highlights of The Truth of the Newell Strength Nutrition Principles:

  • A great appetite (1:22)
  • Weight gain journey (5:31)
  • Scott Abel and The Cycle Diet (9:31)
  • John Meadows and meal training (10:29)
  • Super compensation mode (12:02)
  • Lyle McDonald and fasting (12:44)
  • Effects of fasting (14:12)
  • Principles of nutrition (15:14)
  • Who you are when you eat matters (16:23)

A Great Appetite

Kyle can consume lots of food. Back in 2014, few months after a bodybuilding competition, he spent some time off with his family and friends. Once he consumed lots of donuts, and ate a quart of rice pudding an hour after.

On their way to the next town, he and his wife stopped at a waffle house. There he ate some eggs and three peanut butter waffles. Everyone was amazed how he was able to consume that much amount of food.

Weight Gain Journey

His appetite started in 1997 when he was still in high school. That was the time he started lifting. His approach was to eat as much as he could to gain weight.

He’d go to Burger King with his friend, and order two triple cheese burgers. He continued to consume as much calories until he reached 210 lbs in his high school graduation.

Kyle was lean back then. He continued to do the same in college, and was allowed by his fraternity to workout every day and to eat when he wanted to.

Free Days and Cheat Days

By junior year, Kyle realized the need to change his approach. He decided to diet down. That’s when he got the idea of free days and cheat days.

He began to monitor the food he’d eat. He wanted to make sure they were good for him. Kyle continued to do so until he heard about Scott Abel and his Cycle Diet.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares the principles he learned in strength training and how he developed them. Tune in and learn how you can apply them as well!

Here are the show highlights of How I Came Up With the Newell Strength Training Principles:

  • Big beyond belief (00:59)
  • When stress is applied to the body (2:14)
  • Ranking different types of exercise (2:48)
  • Kyle’s bodybuilding background (3:41)
  • Scott Abel as greatest influence (6:13)
  • The value of having a great coach (7:26)
  • Full range of emotion (11:46)
  • Peripheral hard action (12:44)
  • Progressive overload (14:02)
  • Mind stimulation (15:20)

Big Beyond Belief

Leo Costa and Tom Platz’s Big Beyond Belief inspired Kyle early in life. He wanted to grow muscles and be stronger. He wanted to boost his confidence and attract people.

Kyle read the book in just two days, and reread it a couple times over. It taught him about full body training and the body system.

Ranking Different Types of Exercise

Kyle also learned about ranking different types of exercise. According to Leo and Tom, the highest type of exercise allows the body to move through space.

An example is the idea of pull up vs pull down. Pulling up ranks higher. It also stimulates the brain more.

Background in Bodybuilding

Full body training was life changing for Kyle. With it, he had shorter workouts and was able to train more frequently.

He understood the body’s system even while in college, and continued to put on muscles and strength. After graduation, he worked for a football strengthening program. Kyle is very much interested in his field.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares tips and insights that you can use to hone your brain towards success. Understand the need and identify your action steps!

Here are the show highlights of How to Make Your Brain More Dominant:

  • To be a great student (2:05)
  • Your brain’s CEO (3:48)
  • The stages of learning (5:46)
  • Why copy a writing in cursive (8:17)
  • Your brain needs breaks (10:04)
  • Having mentors and coaches (13:43)
  • Continuous planning (14:55)
  • Why people remain average (18:28)
  • Making a mistake (19:16)
  • Hard work and daily practice (20:22)

To Be a Great Student

It’s critical to know how to learn and be a great student. You can learn from anyone—mistakes, coaches, experiences, mentors, peers.

“Empty your cup every day. Otherwise, it’s full and you can’t put anything else new into it.” -Kyle Newell

Growing up, Kyle was never a great student. He was not someone who was into classroom learning. For him, education comes mostly from the lessons learned outside of school.

Your Brain’s CEO

You are in-charge of your brain. As Kyle discusses, lessons do not simply transmute into your brain. You need to command, set, grow, and help it move forward.

A speaker once said that you’ll be among the lead experts in your field if you read an hour a day for 5 years. You need to learn constantly.

Everytime he tries to learn something, Kyle warms up his brain. He’d go on a trampoline and do recall games. Afterwards, he’d proceed to his hammer drills (refer to episode 33).

The Stages of Learning

There are basically four stages of learning. The first is pass learning, where you simply learn something by going through it. Next is competency, where you become comfortable.

Third is fluency, where things become easy as a result of hard work. The last stage is mastery, which requires at least 10,000 hours to achieve.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell gives an exciting talk about habit formation. It’s a common issue, which not a lot of people know how to deal with. Tune in, and understand how you can create new habits and get better in life!

Here are the show highlights of The Story of the Orange Mallet:

  • The Road Not Taken (00:58)
  • How habits are formed (2:09)
  • The story of the orange mallet (2:43)
  • Mylene sheaths (3:59)
  • Best time to form new habit (4:36)
  • Discipline in habit formation (6:35)
  • The law of momentum (7:43)
  • Habits as systems (8:41)
  • Fatigue makes cowards (10:13)
  • Dependent on energy (12:02)

The Road Not Taken

Kyle tried to write Robert Frost’s poem in cursive. It’s a classic poem about taking the unpopular route. New habits are formed in a similar way.

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.” -Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken

The brain has a neural pathway that isn’t used much. The only way to form that path is to keep going back and forth. Similarly, you need to form new routes to form new habits.

The Orange Mallet

Kyle enjoys doing hammer drills every day. He does it for brain development. He recently bought an orange mallet.

It was not easy having to change from a big mallet to a small one. He used to hit 300, but things aren’t the same. He needs focus to get used with his new orange mallet.

The Best Time to Form a Habit

People struggle creating new habits. In his coaching sessions, Kyle focuses on helping others create new habits in any areas of concern. The best time, as he explains, is when you focus only on one habit while the rest of your life turns off.

For Kyle, while he was still teaching, his best time was usually during summer. It’s when his mind is clear and can pull in different directions. Overall, Kyle suggests that you choose one key habit that could influence all else.

How are you doing with your habits? To hear about The Story of the Orange Mallet, download and listen to the entire episode! An expert in his field, Kyle wants to help people get better in life. Share this to your friends, family, and loved ones.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell debunks some fitness myths. Kyle has learned from the greatest minds in the industry. He quickly learned how people don’t usually think for themselves. Tune in to learn about these fitness lies.

Here are the show highlights of It's Time to Nuke Some More Fitness Lies:

  • Mainstream fitness issue (2:03)
  • The ham story (2:31)
  • Myth 1: calorie deprivation (4:32)
  • The set point (5:09)
  • Limited willpower (5:48)
  • Food as a drug (7:19)
  • Myth 2: cardio (8:39)
  • Myth 3: salt is bad (11:38)
  • Benefits of salt (13:37)
  • Myth 4: core training (14:47)

The Ham Story

Many enjoy the topics of fitness and diet. But not many people think about why they do something. They depend on what they’re told to do instead of also thinking for themselves.

For this, Kyle recalls the ham story. A mother used to bake ham in the holidays. She would cut it in half before baking. It was a tradition their family held.

The thing was they never knew why they were doing so until they asked the person who started the tradition. Similarly, many exercise to stay fit without knowing why they’re doing so. Sadly, they think that they are doing the right thing.

Cutting Calories

Number one in the list is calorie deprivation. Many think that they need to cut calories in order for them to lose weight. But, it doesn’t last long.

There is a set point that the physical body adheres to. As Kyle explains, it’s not something that you can put a habit around. You can’t go on farther than your set point.

Limited Willpower

The body has a limited amount of willpower. Take Kyle for example. His set point is 250 lbs to 235 lbs.

Every time he joins a contest, he starves himself for 4 months. Remember that the brain and body are geared for survival. They draw in weight when they need to.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares some notes he got from a seminar in Florida. Tune in for some classic insights!

Here are the show highlights of Secret Notes from Secret Seminar:

  • An interesting crowd (2:13)
  • Parts of the body that relate to vision (6:10)
  • Writing in cursive (8:01)
  • Activate the cerebellum (9:51)
  • Earning your way up (13:43)
  • Stages of stress response (15:49)
  • Speed as a product of relaxation (17:36)
  • Short interesting notes (20:00)
  • Warrior, scholar, healer (22:25)
  • Share who you are (24:28)

An Interesting Crowd

Among the seminar speakers were Matt Furey and Ted Nicholas. Many renowned personalities attended the event. One was world-class athlete who lacked confidence in himself. Sadly, lack of confidence could make you appear inauthentic to those around you.

Parts of the Body that are Related to Vision

Vision—not the actual sight—is related to different parts of the body. The first one is the parietal lobe, which allows you to remember things. It’s where ideas appear.

The second part is the crown of your head, which projects prophecy. It allows you to predict things that are going to happen. You also have the solar plexus located below your chest. It’s where your gut feeling comes from.

Writing in Cursive

Cursive writing is very much tuned into the brain. It allows your bones and ligaments to move naturally. This is why Kyle encourages people to start writing in cursive.

When you try to copy somebody else’s writing, the brain picks up that other person’s experiences. Writing it the same way gives you access to their thoughts. As Kyle puts it, fine motor skills influence gross motor performance.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell discusses how the brain reacts to survival. Tune in and learn how you can manage your thoughts to respond better to any situation!

Here are the show highlights of Your Brain is Hell Bent on Survival:

  • Power of the eyes in survival (2:15)
  • Breaking ocular lock (3:58)
  • What is peripheral vision (4:52)
  • Pure physical threat (5:26)
  • The fetal position (6:59)
  • Why exercise feels good (9:37)
  • Deciding based on emotions (11:31)
  • Thinking and movement (12:14)
  • The aging brain (13:30)
  • Designed to be pushed (15:08)

Power of the Eyes

The eyes play a major role in survival. Regardless of where you are, you always want to break eye contact with the threat.

The eyes tell a lot of things about what is going on in the brain. Maintaining eye contact tells the threat to keep going. Realize how powerful the eyes are.

Breaking Ocular Lock

The eyes lose their ability to scan when they are fixed onto something for so long. This is called ocular lock. Remember that the eyes are tied into balance and movement patterns.

Attack is usually sensed from the peripheral vision. It is less likely to be sensed when you’re experiencing ocular lock. This is why you need to realize what is going on in your brain, and avoid looking onto something for so long.

The Fetal Position

Your legs and abs are shortened when you’re sitting. This gives you a ready position when faced with a threat.

In the fetal position, you tuck your knees up to your chest and your head down to your knee or stomach area. This enables you to protect your head. Remember that the way you carry yourself reflects the thoughts of your brain, and sends signals to the threat.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares some classic insights to help you manage your energy wisely.

Here are the show highlights of Systems and Chaos Planning:

  • Systems for survival (2:51)
  • Goals for 2017 (3:29)
  • Things that can get in the way (4:33)
  • Ways to manage mental energy (6:07)
  • Time mastery manual (6:32)
  • Experiencing chaos (7:13)
  • Planning for chaos (8:49)
  • Work blocks (11:46)
  • Points in a spiral (12:30)
  • Energy management (13:56)

Systems for Survival

Goals are not habits, but systems are. The brain works on the systems that we create. As discussed in the previous episodes, habits help free up head space. They help us focus as well.

Our bodies need habits and systems for survival. We need to have goals, and break them down to systems.

Goals for 2017

One of Kyle’s goals for this year is to write 3 books. To achieve his goals, he has set the habit of writing 1,500 words per day. Before that, he first identified what he wanted to write about.

Systems make you feel successful every day. You work on them each day for you to achieve your goals. Just like having a dietary habit, you need to stick with the system to succeed.

Things that can Get in the Way

Consistently practicing the system you’ve set can be challenging. Many things can get in the way. This is why it’s important that you know how to manage your energy wisely.

Many people make a list of things to do, fail to get things done, and get frustrated until their tasks pile up throughout the week. Lack of focus can burn up mental energy. Once done, you would need to take a break.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares his thoughts regarding the book Patton on Leadership. It’s a good read for anyone interested in improving their leadership qualities.

Here are the show highlights of Leadership Principles From General George Patton:

  • Doubt in your voice (7:03)
  • Adapting principles to circumstances (5:00)
  • Leading by example (4:18)
  • The habit of winning (3:28)
  • A word on leadership (2:56)

  • Thoughts on progress (11:06)
  • Focused commitment of life energy (12:13)
  • Balance of time and resources (14:06)
  • Do the hard work upfront (18:11)

A Word on Leadership

Everyone can develop their leadership skills. It’s not just for someone running an organization or for coaches.

Leadership is like the essential qualities of self-compassion and love. You need to have it first before enforcing it on others. Simply put, you can’t lead others if you can’t lead yourself.

The Habit of Winning

Winning is a habit and not just a goal. It takes time for the mind to settle on doing something, and turn it as a habit. That’s winning—having the momentum to work on your plan every day.

It’s difficult to keep losing in life. Imagine having to lose a lot of pounds. For you to improve, you need to lose an ounce at a time.

Leading By Example

A leader has to go ahead of his followers. It’s important that you lead from the front. For Kyle, he does the actual training and maintains a healthy lifestyle.

Another important leadership quality to learn is the ability to adapt one’s principles to circumstances. To do so, you need to know your principle first. Learn more leadership principles from today’s episode!

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell shares the immutable laws that he holds true in his life. They are classic principles which everyone else can practice.

Here are the show highlights of Kyle Newell's Rules #6-10:

  • Subscription newsletters (1:32)
  • Immutable laws (3:09)
  • Rule 6 clarity is king (3:31)
  • Significance of clarity (4:21)
  • Rule 7 have a morning routine (5:08)
  • Kyle’s routine (6:35)
  • Rule 8 put your own mask first (7:43)
  • Rule 9 rhetoric vs dialect (9:01)
  • Rule 10 compassion towards self (10:40)
  • Recap (12:14)

Clarity is King

Kyle’s personal word for the year is clarity. The mind can go on a reactive state when it lacks clarity. Consequently, a lot of bad things can happen.

In most of his mind mapping sessions with clients, he saw the lack of clarity that people deal with in life. It presents a kind of ambiguity where you wouldn’t know what’s supposed to happen.

Significance of Clarity

Unspoken issues can lead to unwanted division in a relationship. Consider a husband who has something in mind that annoys him. His wife, on the other hand, thinks about something according to how she views his situation. This unspoken tension, however, grows over time and divides them.

That is why clarity is important—it lessens the intensity of the emotions that one suppresses. Everyone around you wouldn’t have a hard time knowing what you want when you’re clear with your thoughts.

Have a Morning Routine

Having a morning routine enables you to make the most out of your day. The most stressful hour is when the cortisol goes up for about 2 hours before you actually get up from bed. It’s the time when you move from being unconscious to conscious.

Regardless of how comfortable your bed is, the cortisol will alert you of the day. Most people wake up confused, and further allows this main stress hormone to take over. It could lead them to doing things they’re not in control of. This is why it’s important to have a morning routine.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell discusses the importance of releasing bottled-up emotions for a healthy body.

Here are the show highlights of Take a Page from 'Falling Down':

  • Releasing bottled-up emotions (1:50)
  • Meet the alter ego (2:36)
  • Tension myositis syndrome (4:17)
  • The Divided Mind by Doctor John (5:24)
  • Premise behind TMS (5:53)
  • Pain that diverts attention (7:30)
  • Mind map principles with pain (7:53)
  • Psychomotor medicine (10:18)
  • Getting defensive (11:29)
  • Kyle’s piece of advice (13:36)

Releasing Bottled-up Emotions

Kyle recalls the movie titled Falling Down starring Michael Douglas. It revolved around a defense worker who had enough of the belief held by everyone around him.

“You can only be the person down for so long before you lose it.” -Kyle Newell

He went on a rampage, and became in control of everything. Apparently, his repressed or suppressed emotions led him to that point of becoming a badass character. This happens to many people as well.

Meet the Alter Ego

Everyone has an alter ego that just needs to come into play. For this, there will come a time that we will have to release our rage. If we keep on suppressing it, our animal brain could take over and place us in a state where we’re not in control.

Tension Myositis Syndrome

Many people have mystery ailments that have no physical cause. This is what it means to have a tension myositis syndrome.

Kyle had a similar experience for two and a half years. He had all the symptoms of stomach disease, but failed to find out what caused it. They tried everything but to no avail.

That’s when he heard about Doctor John’s book titled The Divided Mind. To this day, it gave him the ability to remain healthy.

Download and listen to Take a Page from 'Falling Down' to learn about the importance of releasing bottled-up emotions to achieve a healthy mind and body. An expert in his field, Kyle wants to help people get better in life. Share this to your friends, family, and loved ones.

  • A life without plans (3:05)
  • Importance of having a routine (4:44)

  • Kyle’s piece of advice (19:47)

A Life without Plans

Kyle started achieving moderate success in his daily life about 4 years ago. For whatever reason, he decided to leave off planning the night before. Consequently, for many months he woke up without having clear objectives in mind. Than gave him more stress.

To discuss it further, he points out the existence of 6 different environments. The time we wake up every morning is the most stressful time for us. It’s when we move from being unconscious to being conscious. During which, we develop hormones that alert us of the day.

Importance of Having a Routine

Survival mechanism is the very act of a routine. It’s something that alerts us each day without having to think about it. If we think about everything that we need to do, our brains will be exhausted even before setting off to do them.

For that reason, we need to save our energy when possible. Good way to do it is by setting goals, allowing our minds to create and rationalize ideas.

Learning and Movement

For a long time, Kyle went through a mild state of depression due to lack of planning. During those months, he would wake up without knowing what to do. From that, we find the connection between the brain and the body’s mechanisms. This means learning cannot be separated from movement.

The Story of the 3 N’s

Kyle shares the story of the 3 N’s: Nolte, knee, and pneumonia. He tells about how he got completely stressed out after working on a number of things at the same time.

He was still working full time as a school teacher when he and his wife opened the training facility. With that, Kyle had to balance two main jobs at the same time.

He ignored the stress it gave him, and just continued working. As a result, he suffered from pneumonia.

Finding the Perfect Balance

The experience taught Kyle the impossibility of having a perfect balance in life. No matter how much you strive for it, it still would not be achieved.

The tough schedule and the stress it caused took away his freedom. Consequently, Kyle had to resign from teaching. He learned classic lessons from it, and he wants to guide others in finding the right balance they need.

Sharing the Secrets

Kyle told some guys about his goals in some of his passions, among which is writing fiction stories. That’s how he learned about Ben Settle’s Persuasion Secrets. The book has some timeless insights that Kyle wishes to share to everyone.

Villain Without a Mission

Many of us live life without a clearly defined purpose. Having no mission, according to Ben, is like living without testicles. It’s a sad reality, which many men and women live by.

As Kyle puts it, a mission is something that transcends self. One does not necessarily have to be caught up in the details immediately. What’s important is knowing one’s mission.

People would know when someone has a clearly defined mission. Charisma and influence can be easily felt.

A Mission to Fulfill

You will not achieve anything significant if you don’t set your mission. It’s not being greedy. You have to do what you need to do first to take care of the people in your life.

“A villain without mission has no value to those he wishes to subjugate.” -Ben Settle

In essence, those who want to lead need to have a mission. None can be an effective leader by being a wandering generality. A mission flows through one’s spirit, and serves as a guide in achieving one’s goals.

Kyle’s Fitness Experience

Kyle has encountered a lot of myths in actual strength training. He’s been in the fitness industry since he was about 16 years old.

Having spent more than half of his life in the field, Kyle has learned from some of the greatest persons and has studied some of the most obscure concepts. To help others, he has made the lessons easy and well understandable for anyone to apply.

Myth on Cardio

One of the misconstrued exercises in the fitness industry is the cardio workout, which basically refers to anything that stresses the cardiovascular system. What is to be understood is that the muscular system is what drives the cardiovascular system.

Many think of it as a way to become healthy. What most fail to realize, however, is the fact that one can’t go on with it unless he enjoys doing it. As Kyle emphasizes, the brain can only form habits around things that it finds pleasurable.

If you can’t keep up with what you do to be fit, you can end up going back to what you used to be.

Cardio for Fat Loss

Cardio workout cannot help you lose fat. This issue can be traced back to the 70s when treadmills became a famous product for businesses. A lot of bogus ideas were created about it then.

Win One for the Gipper

We each have our own stories of success. In today’s podcast, Kyle shares the inspiring story of Knute Rockne. He is said to be the all time greatest college football coach.

Their team was to play the final game in one season when one night one of their players, George Gipp, lay dying. Coach Rockne asked Gipp if there was something he could do for him.

Gip replied, “Coach, there’s gonna come a time that you’re gonna want to win a game more than anything else in the world. When that time comes, tell the boys to get one for the Gipper.” With that, they won the game.

The Happiness Factor

Happiness has a lot to do with success. As Kyle recalls it, every goal is set to provide self with more happiness. Once you achieve happiness, you’re able to help more people.

Happiness deals more with your destination than your present situation. To discuss this further, Kyle recommends the book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams.

Formula for Success

According to Scott Adams, success can be achieved in a number of ways. First is by eating right. How we feel or act may depend on what we eat. Food can affect our body’s hormones and biochemistry.

Similarly, exercise can also make us feel great. Apart from this, there exists 6 more ways to be happy. Tune in to today’s show for more!

Taking a Stand

Regardless of your political stand, Kyle believes that we can get some valuable lessons from Trump. If we consider Trump closely, the first lesson we can get from him is to stand for something.

Like anyone else, you don’t want to attract people that you can’t get along with. For Kyle, he wants to attract people who wants to get better in life. He wants to attract those who want to achieve their greatest self. And, with this comes the significance of charisma.

Attracting People

Kyle discusses how becoming a celebrity or getting a name for yourself is one of the most powerful ways to position yourself to success. He believes in being the best in one’s choice of industry.

Considering the movie Private Parts, we find that there are two possible reasons why people listen to you--reasons why others would be attracted to you. The first is because people can’t stand having you around; the second is people just love you.

Having a Strong Mindset

Kyle believes that Trump can become one of greatest American heroes in history. For this, he discusses Trump’s similarities with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

While he was still a teenage boy living in Austria, Arnold said he will go to America, become the best bodybuilder, become the best movie star, and enter into politics. No one believed him then. Nonetheless, his strong mindset helped him achieve success.

Changing Reality with New Viewpoints

Every once in awhile we gain a new perspective that would change the reality that we live in. It may be something that we did not expect as we focused on reaching a specific goal. For this, Kyle discusses some valuable insights on goal setting based Scott Adams’ How to Fail.

Achieving Goals and Losing Purpose

Throughout our successes in life, we find the difference between goals and systems. Everyone is familiar with goals. However, just because we set goals does not mean that we’ve set them correctly.

As Scott Adams shares in his book, we exist in a state of nearly continuous failure that we hope will be temporary. Once we achieve a goal, as Kyle discusses, we celebrate and feel terrific only until we realize that we just lost the thing that gave us purpose and direction.

Setting Your System Right

When Kyle had his first bodybuilding competition in 2004, everything in his life revolved around it. It consumed him. He had his mind set on it everyday.

What nobody told Kyle about, however, was what can happen when the contest is over. He shares that if we fail to set our system right, we can go on depression. From his experience, he learned the significance of process in goal setting and wishes to share the valuable lessons with everyone.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell discusses the power of momentum and the significance of seeing things in a unique way.

Here are the show highlights of Take Off Your Tin Foil Hat:

  • Looking at things from different perspectives (11:04)
  • Thinking in stories (11:44)
  • Recap (12:44)

Seeing Things Uniquely

One of Kyle’s favorite movies is Signs directed by M. Night Syamalan. Its story revolves around aliens that come to earth. Towards the end of the movie, you’ll find one of the characters sitting inside a room and has a tin foil hat on to protect his brain from alien mind control.

In life, we tend to take too much and just do what we’re told. We usually fail to go outside the box. For this, Kyle discusses the importance of listening and seeing things in a unique way.

Realizing the Power of Momentum

Kyle discusses the power of momentum. Consider the last time when you went on a vacation. It most likely took you a long while to slow down and unwind--to completely feel at rest after a busy life. Most likely again, the same happened when you returned from that vacation; it took you awhile to get going again.

Even without trying to think about it, you had work momentum getting into vacation. You came back afterwards with vacation momentum. Realize that both are powerful and difficult to break.

Gaining Momentum

Momentum is similar to stoking a fire. Once we get it going, you can throw anything to the fire and it’ll burn. Once it sizzles, the heat momentum goes on.

Similarly in life, the hardest part is dealing with the metabolic engine in our brain. Kyle shares that sometimes we don’t have to know the exact goals we’re after. We just have to gain momentum and just get it going daily.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell discusses the importance of weakness, and how it helps us become better individuals.

Here are the show highlights of Why You Need Kryptonite Just Like Superman:
  • The story of Superman (1:28)
  • Significance of weakness (2:43)
  • Imagining what it’s like to achieve everything (4:23)

  • What pressure does (11:54)
  • Resistance as the main kryptonite (12:18)
  • Failure and learning (14:00)
  • Recap (14:35)

Why Need Kryptonite

Kryptonite is famously known as Superman’s weakness. It comes in many different forms as discovered in many versions of the myth, and is usually ascribed to Superman’s humanity just like Achilles’ heel. Due to its popularity, it is now universally understood as a term describing man’s fundamental weakness.

As we may or may not know, humans bond in struggle. We need to seek out challenges to discover those that are real. Growth requires us to move outside of our comfort zone.

Becoming Better with Obstacles

As a boy, Kyle always imagined a mythical character he’s up against. He needed obstacles to help him keep getting better. When Kyle entered bodybuilding, he always imagined guys better than him. They kept him going.

Finding Purpose and Inspiring Others

In this episode, Kyle shares an interesting story about Michael, a bodybuilder who won a lot of bodybuilding shows. He turned down his pro cards, and just kept fighting in nationals until he suddenly disappeared for a number of years.

Anything that comes too easy provides no purpose. Struggles make the diamond. The hotter the heat, the harder the steel. In life, we only inspire others by the struggles we overcome.

In today’s show, the human strength expert Kyle Newell explores the concepts of depth and volume in certain areas of life.

Here are the show highlights of Would You Rather Have 4 Friends or 200?:

  • Finding a best friend (1:30)
  • The daily to-do list analogy (4:40)
  • The jack-of-all-trades but master of none (6:54)
  • The brain dump strategy (8:10)
  • A million dollars vs a penny doubled in 31 days (10:18)
  • Being busy (11:03)
  • Enthusiasm, willpower, and endurance (12:10)
  • How to determine the four quarters in your life? (12:53)
  • Selfish vs selfless brain chemicals (14:06)
  • Recap (15:23)
Focusing on the Ultimate

Consider this question: Would you rather have 4 quarters or a hundred pennies? It’s basically the same question we may want to consider in certain areas of life, such as friendship. As a young boy, Kyle was extremely interested in finding a best friend. He always valued in-depth relationships.

When we relate this idea on our facebook friends, we find that we can have a lot of friends in our list but only have very little to say about each. When it comes to having friends, Kyle suggests that it is much better to have few options. For this, we refer to the analogy of the daily to-do list.

Getting Rid of Brain Magnets

When we have a lot of things to do in mind, our brains may encounter certain brain magnets. They are those that distract us from our ultimate goals. One good strategy to get rid of them is the brain dump.

Find a distraction-free zone where you can declutter your mind of brain magnets. Get a notebook or a blank sheet of paper, and spend some 30-50 minutes writing down anything in your mind. Simply follow your stream of consciousness until you get down to what needs to be done first.

Determining the Four Quarters

Look at what gives you energy and avoid what doesn’t. Distractions may come and lead us astray from our ultimate goals when we don’t know our main focus. You may list down your ultimate goals under the four main areas where you can succeed--financial, freedom, fun, and fulfillment--and focus on them.

  • How to deal with those who refuse optimistic views? (10:00)
  • An example of empathic super power (11:50)
  • Which part of the brain do we need to access for a solution? (15:10)
  • Recap (18:37)

Achieving Clarity

Kyle felt sorry for himself when he blew out his left knee. Two and a half years later, he blew his other knee and underwent surgery again. This gave him a different perspective in life. Some people may want others to feel sorry for them as well. When we realize what sorrow is, we need to backtrack for some realizations. For this, we have to understand how the brain operates to achieve clarity.

Human vs Mammalian

In one of his therapies, Kyle was asked why he acts so differently with his dog Matina. Well, most people find it difficult to connect with the present or with their actual situation. This is because they fail to access the emotional part of their brain. To understand this concept better, Kyle gives a clear contrast between the human part of the brain and the mammalian part of the brain.

Making Connections Towards Understanding

Kyle has a very unique personality type that exudes with empathy. He naturally shows this during his wife’s current pregnancy. He gets the same empathy symptoms with her, thus, allowing him to connect with his wife and understand her.
